Thursday 17th November | Honor Wilson-Fletcher on The Today Programme

A report from The Office for National Statistics has shown that unemployment for 16-24 year-olds has risen to a record 1.02 million.

Have a listen to the Today Programme on Wednesday 16th November (21 minutes into the programme) to hear Honor Wilson-Fletcher MBE query if young people are being adequately prepared for real life.

Do young people have adequate communication skills? Can they express themselves efficently? And do they have the life skills to take risks and deal with failures?

But Honor goes beyond simply stating the problems and moves onto the solutions. Honor adovcated drawing the real world into the classroom, for example perhaps students should have the experience of setting up their own businesses in schools.

Our Chair, John Dunford, provided a motivational talk at The Co-operative Schools Annual Conference in November 2011.
 
John said educators need to “look outwards” to ensure a “fully rounded education for young people”, calling for a curriculum that “engages young people and is relevant to them and their future”.

Whole Education is referenced as an example of organisation which strives to develop the intellectual, social and emotional competencies of young people.
