Apps for Good
Apps for Good is a course in which young people learn to create imaginative mobile apps that change their world. The course has proved successful in London, receiving critical acclaim, and is now available to schools across the UK.
During 70 contact hours, Apps for Good students work in teams to uncover the issues they want to tackle and solve. The course is very practical and interactive, consisting of five main stages: Problem Discovery, Research, Solution Design, Product Design and Build & test. To date, schools have run this as an extracurricular activity, but we now have schools who are piloting the delivery of the course within curricular time.
Certified Partners nominate a member of staff to deliver the course and be trained over 2-3 days. They can access the online course content and Q&A section, as well as benefit from online and in-person support from CDI Europe staff. In addition, they have access to training and ongoing professional development opportunities and networking for the members of staff who run the course. Their students will benefit from direct support from the Apps for Good Expert Community and have access to regional and national Dragon’s Den competitions.
Subsidised partners can receive free equipment and staff training. To be eligible, schools must show a least one of the following: High proportion of students come from low-income communities/number of students on free school meals is above the national average, high proportion of students’ first language is not English and proportion of students on special educational needs register is above the national average
Non-subsidised partners need to provide their own equipment and funding for staff training. However, we are waiving the training costs for non-subsidised partners until the end of September 2011.
