The Co-operative College
The Co-operative College
The Co-operative College is a non-traditional college which works with learners and co-operatives all over the world. Since it was founded in 1919, the College has developed five key areas of work: developing members and managers; working with co-operatives globally; learning from our heritage; working with schools and young people; and research on the co-operative sector.
Education is one of the underpinning principles of the co-operative movement globally and inspiring a new generation to support and engage with co-operative values and principles is a key part of the Co-operative College’s work. This co-operative approach to education demonstrates to a new generation the power of working together for our mutual benefit.
The College does this through: Establishing co-operative schools across the country and setting up a nationwide co-operative schools network; working with a network of co-operative Business and Enterprise Colleges to develop curriculum resources for use in schools which bring the co-operative values into the curriculum, and particularly into the study of business and enterprise; running the Young Co-operatives programme, which enables students to set up and run their own business as a co-operative; and establishing links between schools and young people internationally.
The Co-operative College has produced a number of free resources on fair and ethical enterprise, including the Co-operate for Change! Fairtrade in your School resources for primary and secondary schools, a Robert Owen Day pack on the father of social enterprise, resources to support the Greenfingers and Recon Young Co-operatives models, a Young Co-operatives Action Kit and Everybody’s Business, an exciting web based programme on ethical business. These are all available from the Enterprise Network website, www.enterprisevillage.org. The College also provides a consultancy service to assist schools wishing to become co-operative schools, helping them with the legal and consultation processes. Additionally, a range of training and other services are available to support co-operative schools in developing and implementing a membership strategy.
