Learning to Lead

Learning to Lead takes the real life experience of ‘school’ as a community and provides a framework that enables children and young people to take an active role in their school and beyond and to gain lessons for life in the process. The Learning to Lead training, tools and structures emphasize trust, respect and consensus as a basis for working together.

Learning to Lead is a Community Interest Company and not-for-profit organisation. Young people who have experienced Learning to Lead have played a key part in its development and are represented on the board of directors. The programme has evolved over a period of 10 years starting at the Blue School, Wells, Somerset, a large state secondary and has now been adopted by over 80 schools (primary and secondary) across the UK.

Based on tried and tested practice from real school experience, Learning to Lead provides a package of initial training for staff and a comprehensive set of tools to introduce the programme to their schools. On-going support is provided through membership to the Learning to Lead Community of Schools, which includes access to the LtoL ‘hub’ www.ltolschools.org to connect and share experience with one another. Review and Renew days bring teachers from different schools to together on an annual basis.

Learning to Lead was born out of a concern for the lack of opportunity for genuine student involvement in the life of school communities. By shifting the emphasis to how students can make a difference, it offers a win-win-win situation for the students, the teachers and the whole school community.

Children and young people learn to work with a variety of other people from different year groups in a respectful, supportive environment where different types of ability and character are valued and enthusiasm thrives.

“By inviting students to exercise leadership in the way that the Learning to Lead programme does, we take a major step towards the restoration of trust in young people.”
David Frost, University of Cambridge evaluation: Learning to Lead.

Teachers welcome the sense of exploration with young people this approach brings. Students value the different kind of relationship that develops with their teachers. For many, it is the first time they have felt recognition for what they can do.

The comprehensive range of tools and processes can support and enhance other programmes within the school and create a coherent whole school approach to transforming relationships and the culture of the school.
