UK Youth
In 2008 UK Youth was commissioned by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) to establish 10 Youth Achievement Foundations nationally over a three-year period. These Youth Achievement Foundations are based on UK Youth’s pilot established in 2003. As a result of the successes of the pilot and the DCSF Pathfinder project, UK Youth has established that there is a growing need for this type of approach for marginalised and vulnerable young people and is continuing to offer licences to establish more Youth Achievement Foundations wherever there is a need.
YAF’s aim to re-engage, re-motivate & re-inspire Young People disengaged from mainstream education. The essence of the Youth Achievement Foundation’s curriculum is the use of non-formal learning which will:
- Engage learners through a menu of activities so that their personal and social skills can be developed sufficiently to help them to realise their potential;
- Motivate and interest learners by means of vocational learning so that they can experience a range of opportunities;
- Use the activities-based and vocational learning to assist learners to achieve both personally from a skills perspective and through accreditation which has value within the education system.
The YAF curriculum is more sensitive to the social characteristics which shape learners' lives than conventional school approaches. It develops learning outcomes and assessment criteria, which will equip them to become more skilled at interpersonal relationships, better self-starters, team workers, problem-solvers and independent learners - very much the qualities employers say they are looking for.
