FILMCLUB

Education charity FILMCLUB provides young people aged 5-18 with cultural engagement and social cohesion, through helping schools set up and run weekly film clubs for in-school film screenings, discussion and review. The objective is to have a positive impact on children’s personal and academic development, irrespective of background and across the scale from vulnerable and special needs to gifted and talented. FILMCLUB has proven track record of improving behaviour and education outcomes, while tackling social development, creating communities and dealing with disengagement.

FILMCLUB delivers a tool for teaching professionals to broaden minds, challenge thinking and open new avenues for learning by exploring films from across the globe and from over 100 years of cinema. Offering all the necessary support to help schools run clubs, FILMCLUB provides teacher training, a curated film catalogue of close to 4000 films, distribution of films, teaching resources, and editorially rich interactive website, incentives to encourage review writing and access to film industry events for members.

Close to 250,000 pupils across 7,000 schools are now watching, discussing and reviewing films each week, with real and quantifiable impacts. FILMCLUB helps develop: independent thinking; literacy and critical analysis skills; cultural awareness; vocational aspiration; peer and teacher relationships; confidence and social skills which help pupils integrate more into school life.

FILMCLUB’s Youth Development Scheme provides industry interaction activities such as in-school visits, webcasts, the Young Ambassadors programme and Review Writing Scheme. Through in-schools visits and webcasts, FILMCLUB members experience first hand a dynamic interaction with film professionals, discussing the creative processes of being involved in film through Q&A’s, workshops, special screenings, webcasts and set visits. FILMCLUB Young Ambassadors are selected from thousands of members aged 8 – 17 to act as the young voices on behalf of FILMCLUB. Trained by professional members of the film industry, Young Ambassadors are provided with the opportunity to interview filmmakers and celebrities at red carpet events and press junkets, providing skills and aspiration for those wanting to work in film. The Review Writing Scheme encourages all members to write film reviews on the FILMCLUB website, not only increasing literacy and critical analysis skills but also allowing members to be in the running for great prizes. The ‘Review of the Week’ competition acknowledges the best reviews.

FILMCLUB’s strategy was created in consultation with educationalists and film professionals, aiming to provide a rich, engaging and accessible cultural resource for children, enriching understanding.

Since it’s launch in 2008, FILMCLUB has been funded by the Department for Education and operates with the support of various other film organisations, including: LOVEFiLM (who provide free DVD’s directly to schools).
