Enabling Enterprise
About Enabling Enterprise:
Enabling Enterprise is a not-for-profit
organisation, set up by a team of teachers in 2008. Their mission is to equip
young people with the skills, aspirations and experiences they need to succeed
in life.
They provide a wide range of programmes for
students aged 8 - 19 which can be embedded into the school timetable. These help teachers by integrating
skills development into different areas of the curriculum. So, to help maths lessons come alive,
students create the packaging for a new chocolate bar, using shape work and
graphs to analyse their market research.
In English, they might write an anthology or student magazine; whilst in
Business Studies, they might set up their own shop in the playground selling smoothies
or donuts. All the while, students
develop skills that are subject-specific and enterprising – like working in
teams, turning ideas into plans, giving presentations and communicating
effectively.
Enabling Enterprise create packages of teacher training,
teaching resources and student trips to top businesses to embed enterprise
throughout the curriculum, developing students’ skills experiences and aspirations.
Teachers are able to access the
resources by simply downloading ready-made lesson plans, worksheets and
presentations needed to deliver full programmes. By incorporating their programmes into classroom teaching, Enabling Enterprise have been able to impact over 10,000
students in London, Birmingham, Manchester and beyond.
Range of Programmes:
Enabling Enterprise understand that what works for one school might not for another, so they have
developed a wide variety of programmes to meet those needs. The Core Programme is aimed at students
from Year 9-11, and sees them set up their own business or long term project
over the course of the year, allowing them to attain an NCFE Level 2
qualification. For primary
students, there are a range of termly programmes which have a different focus;
students might create their own environmentally friendly toy, start a campaign
to tackle a social challenge or learn about different cultures as they create a
recipe book. Crucially, students
have ownership over these projects, therefore developing their confidence, independent
thinking, creativity and teamwork. Bespoke programmes are also available and tailored to the
needs of individual schools and one-day enterprise challenges, through the new
‘Edventuring’ scheme.
A key
part of Enabling Enterprise's mission is to raise students’ aspirations, so they organise and
deliver termly trips to top businesses including UBS Bank,
PWC and Oliver Wyman management consultancy. Students get the opportunity to work throughout the
day with volunteers from the companies, honing their enterprise skills and
carrying out business simulations.
Costing:
The
cost of the programmes depends on the duration and the number of students who
will be taking part. Normally,
prices range between £800 and £2,500 but they work to all different budgets.
