NCY Trust and the Youth Achievement Awards

Youth Achievement Awards

The Youth Achievement Awards are a project based approach to education and are available through youth organisations, schools and educational projects. In order to achieve an Award, young people must begin a project which requires them to take on increasing levels of responsibility for their work, helping them to develop a sense of ownership over their activities and the learning involved. The Awards enable young people to build self-awareness, self-esteem, communication and negotiation skills and teach young people how to work with others in teams.

The Awards are offered through a personal development and employability skills curriculum framework, providing opportunities for students to learn the skills involved in managing their work, lives and relationships. The Awards focus is on an appropriate curriculum for young people, tailored around their educational needs.

NCY Trust

NCY Trust, a children’s charity, works with young people at risk of offending. The young people the charity works with are referred to them by Newham Social Services and have to overcome many obstacles to attain emotional well-being and to achieve the skills to manage their own lives and living accommodation. For some it is a history of abuse or family breakdown, for others it is about not even having a family in this country. It is a steep learning curve and to help them NCY Trust have decided to accredit their learning with the Youth Achievements Awards. This will not only be useful for their CV’s but will also be a practical acknowledgement of their achievements. Working towards the Bronze Award young people cover topics such as household management, money management, employment, education, sexual identity, interpersonal skills and dealing with responsibilities – all of which are essential skills for successful and independent living.
