Next Practice in Parents and Carers: Reach Out

This is a project based in the socially deprived area of St Anne’s in Nottingham City, and uses the skills and knowledge of an experienced councillor to train parents in three schools in order to:

• build a community of parents to befriend and support each other

• boost confidence around supporting their children

• develop new skills and behaviours to influence all aspects of their relationships with their children

The project also aims to develop a suite of materials which are designed to help parents to work with other parents on a range of barriers to achievement such as debt, depression and talking to their children.

Key Benefits:

The intended outcomes from this project are to help all parents to:

• read letters and correspondence from the school

• find their voice to influence the education of their children

• step forward and take responsibility for building a community of parents who be-friend each other and learn to better manage and resolve conflicts

• bring about a shift in their perception and start to define the needs of parents who are presently reluctant to come into school

• develop new skills and behaviours which will have an influence on all aspects of relationships including with their children.
