The Youth Achievement Awards in Swindon

The Youth Achievement Awards and Challenges

The Youth Achievement Awards and Challenges are a project based approach to education and are available through youth organisations, schools and educational projects. In order to achieve an Award, young people must begin a project which requires them to take on increasing levels of responsibility for their work, helping them to develop a sense of ownership over their activities and the learning involved.

Youth Achievement Awards in Swindon

As part of their Youth Achievement Award, young people in Swindon set up and ran their own radio station. The young people spent several months learning how to prepare and conduct interviews, present a show live on air and use sound and production equipment. The radio station broadcast from a local youth services project and went live on-air for two weeks. The programmes were all put together by young people and included ‘Politics’, ‘Young Swindon’ and slots from young DJs and MCs. As well as learning the technical aspects of running a radio station, the young people developed as individuals, gaining confidence and self-esteem. The young people involved used the Youth Achievement and Youth Challenge Awards as recognition of their involvement in the project. As an ongoing project, Swindon Youth Services are now working with a community radio station to encourage more young people to get involved in radio production and journalism.
