Unfiltered, Young’s People’s Reflections on Smoking

Peer influence can have a huge effect on the lives of young people, how they act and what they can potentially get involved in. This can be of particular concern when it comes to issues such as drugs, smoking, alcohol and the transition into adulthood. The Peer Education Project in Dundee has developed a unique model addressing drugs, smoking and alcohol awareness using peer-led methods to inform and educate young people.

Young people aged 13-18 have most recently been exploring health improvement through art. Young people have been trained in film, photography and creative writing skills, developing their confidence and self-determination through their own creativity and personal exploration. It was with the purpose of utilising these newfound skills that the project’s Photography Group was established. Using predominantly digital photography the group learned how to use the different functions on a camera to achieve certain shots, as well as using relevant software to digitally enhance their images. Now, the group is developing an innovative health resource, which will demonstrate their own personal thoughts and attitudes on smoking and its effects.

Impact

The group created a collection of photographs titled ‘Unfiltered – Young people’s perceptions of smoking’, which were showcased in a weeklong display. The series of images and text were a collective portrayal of the current attitudes held by young people towards smoking. The group explored their personal views of smoking’s social, physical and health impacts and were responsible for planning photo-shoots and preparing props as well as learning lighting and photography techniques. All members of the group have developed their ability to critically reflect, research and work in teams, as well as use new technical skills through their involvement with the photography group and Gold Youth Achievement Awards.

“I learned that I can do a lot more than I give myself credit for.” Peer Educator

“The knowledge helps them deal with peer group pressure. They are confident to ask why, not just see it as yes or no.” Mother of Peer Educator

“I learned more about peer pressure and not giving into it or doing things that I don’t want to do.” Young Person
