Speak Young People's Group

Speak is a young people’s group which works closely with Leicestershire County Council. The young people at Speak are paid by the Council to go out into the community to inspect other youth groups working in the area and to suggest ways in which they can be improved. Speak was formed in 2007 by a group of young people after their local club was forced to close down. Now, working as youth inspectors, the young people are able to help prevent other youth groups from having to close down. The group have learned to take on serious responsibilities, trust their judgement and become more confident in their own abilities. The youth inspectors also passed on huge benefits to the youth projects that they went to view; some were excellent and some were not as good, allowing the inspectors to give support and advice to others on how to improve their facilities.

“My advice to anyone who has experienced a similar situation to ours (with the closure of our youth club) is to do something about it! Don’t just sit there and let someone dictate to you how bad your project is, talk to them, try and negotiate and suggest changes”
