The Youth Achievement Awards

The Youth Achievement Awards are a project based approach to education and are available through youth organisations, schools and educational projects. In order to achieve an Award, young people must begin a project which requires them to take on increasing levels of responsibility for their work, helping them to develop a sense of ownership over their activities and the learning involved. The Awards enable young people to build self-awareness, self-esteem, communication and negotiation skills and teach young people how to work with others in teams.

The Full Throttle Club

The ‘Full Throttle Club’ decided to dramatically improve their facilities at the Frank F. Harrison Scramble Track so that young people who were disabled could access its facilities. The young people worked as a group to create their own application bid and were awarded £13,000 from Walsall Youth Service to put in place a host of new facilities. With the money, the young people decided to form their own committee to oversee the work. All this work was used as evidence in their Bronze Award portfolios. The young people of Full Throttle Club have made a contribution to the scramble track that can benefit many people for years to come. Their hard work and the commitment they invested in to making the changes possible is proof that young people can and do make positive contributions to their community and can gain invaluable life skills whilst doing it.
