Human Scale Education (HSE) is committed to helping large secondary schools, of which there are a growing number, restructure into small learning communities where teachers may better know their students and students may better know each other. Such schools allow for more effective, intimate learning and a greater sense of community and belonging. These too are the circumstances in which the principles and practices espoused by Whole Education – a greater emphasis on a more rounded education, particularly in the fields of social and emotional learning, as well as a greater involvement by young people in their learning - are more likely to flourish and this is the point of connection between the two organisations. Through its Expo events, its publications and website as well as meetings with other educational organisations Whole Education offers HSE an especially timely opportunity both to spread its message and to learn of other initiatives from which it may benefit or to which it may contribute.
