The Youth Achievement Awards

The Youth Achievement Awards are a project based approach to education and are available through youth organisations, schools and educational projects. In order to achieve an Award, young people must begin a project which requires them to take on increasing levels of responsibility for their work, helping them to develop a sense of ownership over their activities and the learning involved. The Awards enable young people to build self-awareness, self-esteem, communication and negotiation skills and teach young people how to work with others in teams.

Kayly's Story

“I really enjoyed doing my Gold Youth Achievement Award. I had support from staff which really helped me. The challenges I did included:

1) Local Culture, which included organising a visit to London to see a Billy Elliot Show.

2) Taking on the on role of Peer Educator and completing a project with a junior group on Equality & Diversity at my Youth Achievement Foundation Cnetre

3) Attending & contributing to monthly Management Committee meetings as a Youth Representative and also on the Area Representation Group to give young people a voice.

4) Organising a Residential to Whithaugh Park, which included securing funding.

The challenge I enjoyed the most was Culture. The reason for this was because I got a taste of my own local culture and could share this with other young people. From all of my challenges I feel I now have more confidence and have gained new skills e.g. communication, planning, delivering and evaluation. These skills have helped me both in my day-to-day life and with my college course. I am now working towards my Platinum Youth Achievement Award.”

A New Start with Bronze

The KRAN Riverside Project offers Life Skills education for 16-18 year old unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC). The course has boosted the students’ independent living skills, and gradually improved their English. These young people are now living independently within the community.
