Janine's Story
When Janine’s school helped her to organise work experience in a dental technology lab, she didn’t realise she was embarking on her future career. The technicians make equipment for dentists – bridges, porcelain crowns and dentures. The training is hands-on, using practical learning methods. Janine says: “I’d been thinking of going into hairdressing, but when I was offered a job as a technician I said yes because I'd enjoyed the work experience it so much.”
Her employers encouraged her to do a BTEC, and now Janine goes to college one day a week. She is learning both in the lab and at college. “My boss said the course would benefit me as well as them. We learn the anatomy side of it on each job, but as a dental technician there's so much to be learnt because you're always doing different kinds of jobs. The course means you can carry on working and maybe eventually own your own place. I'd like to work in a private practice because you get the chance to do more detail on the job and make it more realistic.”
A New Start with Bronze

The KRAN Riverside Project offers Life Skills education for 16-18 year old unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASC). The course has boosted the students’ independent living skills, and gradually improved their English. These young people are now living independently within the community.
