Robert Owen Day at Sir Thomas Boughey Co-operative Business and Enterprise College
The Robert Owen Day, which was held for Year 7 students from three schools from the Staffordhsire ELP at the end of March, explored the way Owen’s ideas live on over 150 years after his death through activities such as art, music, acting and games. It followed on from the success of Robert Owen Days which were run by the Co-operative College in November in Manchester and Southampton.
Lana Eardley, a Year 10 student from Sir Thomas Boughey, who helped run the day, explained:
“I took part in the Robert Owen Day, where two other schools which are working towards co-operative trust status – Brownhills and Birches Head – came in to see how our school works, and learn more about the founder of the Co-Op Robert Owen.
I was a facilitator, which is like a leader, in a group where I was teaching a skill with three other students. Our skill was dancing, as we were all trained in this. We used a dance we learnt in PE because we all knew it.
All the groups worked very well. They learned the skill well, and I learnt leadership and communication skills. It was a very enjoyable day, and reflected our school and pupils’ attitude in a positive manner.”
Cerys Eardley, a Year 7 student, also benefited from attending the day:
“I liked the each one teach one club where we learned the dance as the girls were very friendly. I also liked the co-operative games with the parachute, plus the band at the end was really entertaining. Overall it was very good and something different to the normal school day.”
