Sam's story - Collaton St Mary Primary School

Sam’s Story

Sam Ward is the Catering Manager at Collaton St Mary Primary School near Paignton.

“Since joining the Food for Life Partnership the kitchen has become an integral part of the school, rather like the hub of a family home. Kitchen staff and the whole dining team feel as if they positively contribute to the lunchtime experience. I’m now able to venture out of the kitchen into the classrooms to talk to the children about where their food comes from and the importance of a healthy balanced diet - it is great for me to be a part of their learning in this way.

The Food for Life Partnership has helped raise the profile of food and food education within the school. The kitchen runs seasonal cooking activities where the children can come and take part in hands on practical skills. I love to see their excitement as they put on their chef hats and aprons and get stuck in!

Dinner numbers have increased and there is a real sense of pride about ‘our school food’ from pupils, staff, and parents. There is nothing more rewarding for me than when a child proudly shows me their empty plate… What more could you want!”
