Tom's Story - Ralph Allen school

Tom was an able student who found himself in trouble in school due to his inability to control his anger, which in turn started to affect his concentration and learning progress. He had come very close to exclusion for using abusive language to staff and almost hurting another student. Toms home life was chaotic. He lived with his mother and younger sister and increasingly found life at home particularly stressful. There were often heated family arguments.

The school encouraged Tom to attend a ‘Dissolving Barriers to Learning’ workshop where systemic methods and tools were used to unpack and seek ways to resolve personal issues. After the workshop Tom found it easier to control his anger and he also began to recognise some of the triggers for his burst of anger at home. His behaviour in school is much improved and he is keen to achieve his GCSE’s as he sees attainment of these qualifications as necessary for life improvement.
