At just 20, Laura feels confident that her problem-solving skills will eventually see her promoted to a managerial position at multinational IT company EDS – skills that she acquired not through a management studies course, but through her apprenticeship in systems administration.

Laura’s interest in IT was awakened by using computers at school. “I enjoyed doing things with computers and decided I wanted to start a career in IT industry. When I saw the apprenticeship advertised I thought it would be a good way to get in”

Laura’s instinct was right. “Everything was based in the workplace – it was a good way to do it all, as you’re constantly learning something new. It enabled you to get more done.”

The apprenticeship has allowed her to learn by taking on responsibilities. She project-managed the installation of a BP computer training room, and was congratulated by BP for her handling of the project. Managers at EDS recognised Laura’s commitment and enthusiasm, and her success won her a Learners First Award.

Since completing her apprenticeship, Laura has progressed on to the EDS degree for modern apprentices. It can be difficult juggling full-time work and study, but the skills learned from her apprenticeship have stood her in good stead.
