Studio Schools

Studio Schools are a new type of 14-19 school designed to engage young people who might not otherwise reach their full potential in traditional school environments. Aiming to cultivate skills as well as qualifications, they have been developed to meet the needs of a significant subset of young people who find the current academically focused education system disengaging. Studio Schools will better engage these more practical learners by offering a more ‘hands on’ approach to learning, tailored to students’ individual needs and aspirations. Studio Schools will break new ground in the British educational system, offering an innovative approach to learning that could transform the lives of young people across the country.

Studio Schools will teach the national curriculum but will have a very different style and ethos to most existing schools, with a much stronger emphasis on practical work and enterprise. The Studio Schools curriculum will move away from the traditional methods of subject delivery with the majority of the curriculum delivered in a practical way. This practical learning will be more relevant and contextualised, a greater focus on local businesses and the local community. They will allow students to develop important employability skills like teamwork, initiative and punctuality, whilst also gaining the key qualifications they need to progress.

To give them a first-hand insight into the working world, all Studio Schools students will also spend a significant portion of their weekly time participating in meaningful work experience. These work placements will be aspirational and linked to employment opportunities in the local area. This will allow students to develop an in-depth knowledge of how businesses operate and give them direct experience of their local labour market. Crucially, students will receive remuneration for their work, with students over 16 earning a proper wage. This unique element of the Studio Schools curriculum will play an important role in raising aspirations and equipping students with the skills and experience they need to enter the local job market or set up their own businesses.

Studio Schools will bring together these key elements into a single school model. Students will experience a highly personalised learning programme that will help them become independent, engaged, effective and empowered students and high achievers. On leaving their Studio School students will have gained at least Level 2 qualifications. They will have a variety of progression routes available to them including the potential to go to university.
