Central Befordshire Council
Central Bedfordshire recognises the approach behind Whole Education
The new Council of Central Bedfordshire has consulted upon and agreed an education vision for its council area from 2010. The vision is driven by the following guiding principles:
• Raising standards of learning and teaching
• Improving outcomes for young people
• Keeping what is best for children and families at the centre of any change.
The vision document approved by the Council seeks to reflect recent curriculum reform and asks that Central Bedfordshire schools should be based around providing for communities and their needs.
The common beliefs of Whole Education in equipping young people to be adaptable and creative to engage in relevant learning and to become good citizens chimes well with the Central Bedfordshire vision.
In Central Bedfordshire, we understand that young people spend much of their time outside of school and that more dialogue between school and provision for young people in the community can enhance the education of young people.
Central Bedfordshire asks its schools to be responsible for children and young people within their community and encourages schools within communities to ensure that there are common approaches to community access and school facilities. Work is now on-going to assess how enhanced services can be delivered through clusters of schools.
Schools in Central Bedfordshire are taking a joint responsibility for the provision for young people with other partner agencies in the community. We also believe that each young person needs to take responsibility for their own future too. We acknowledge the aims of Whole Education and hope that it fulfils its aim to be not just about schools and colleges but about spreading a different approach to learning through the community and throughout people's lives.
