The programme
With a new focus on developing middle leaders, WE Lab Classrooms supports innovative and passionate practitioners to lead sustainable and purposeful change over time.
The programme is an opportunity to engage critically with ‘two for one’ teaching and learning approaches – those which research indicates develop both academic knowledge and wider skills and qualities (for example, teamwork and communication).
Middle leaders will have access to coaching and expert support as they put together an action research project, alongside the opportunity to collaborate with hundreds of like minded peers from across England.
“This has been an excellent opportunity to develop my teaching practice and one of the most worthwhile pieces of CPD I have completed to date.” – Lab Classrooms participant
The approaches on offer for 2021/22 are:
-
- Deeper Instruction
- Feedback & Critique
- Flipped Learning (digital focus)
- Metacognition

The launch event
We are delighted to welcome Professor Guy Claxton at the Lab Classrooms launch event:
Teachers should always be tinkering with their classroom practice to improve their outcomes. Sometimes the motivation for this is “Push”: attempting to reduce unwanted behaviour. Other times, it is “Pull”: achieving the school vision more successfully. Lab Classrooms is a Pull project, trialling ways to get great results by enhancing pupils’ and students’ independence and ownership of their learning. Critically, pedagogy that is effective for achieving Results Only is NOT good for achieving Results Plus Independence: if that is the goal, teaching has to change. In this opening session, Guy will clarify the vision for a “whole education” and illustrate a wide variety of tweaks that could form the seeds of a successful action research project.
The event will also include an introduction to using research in education and the Lab Classroom programme, and more information on the different approaches and specific-approach events.
