Last week Whole Education held our first Headspace event of the year. Headspace is a series of three annual events to give secondary headteachers ‘distance from the desk’ and reflect on the ‘why’ and ‘what’ of their leadership. It focuses on leaders personally as well as professionally, and on giving space to think. During Covid-19, which has put so much operational pressure on leaders, we believe this is more important than ever.
For our Autumn Headspace event WE were joined by Mary Myatt as keynote speaker for an entire morning. The event drew on Mary’s new book ‘Back on Track’ and helped leaders reflect on their leadership of a whole education curriculum. The event was opened for primary leaders to join their secondary colleagues due to the extraordinary circumstances. Discover what you said.

Thanks @WholeEducation for a wonderful morning with @MaryMyatt. Has really got me thinking about the long term plans for our curriculum and such a joy to be brought out of the current headspace for a while.

“My first experience of Whole Education and I loved it.”
“A fantastic morning, which has aided reflection and helped to re-boost the direction and actions going forward.”
Always good to hear positive feedback from @MaryMyatt about the @WholeEducation network: “colleagues and schools in the WE network have probably got their culture right. WE is a community that is often replicated in your schools.”

In particular, you appreciated having the space to focus on your leadership and strategy
“Great to be able to take the time to re-focus on the strategic direction, when it is easy for the operational elements to take over in these current times.”
“Thank you, great to have a conversation in school that is not covid related.”
“Great to have the opportunity to take time to think!”
“Thinking time – thoughts on what we can do now to inform planning ‘post Covid'”
“Thank you all, so good to have some topping up of the jar in training during these times!”
“I don’t often get time to read about learning as I am so busy doing the day job – you have inspired me to carve out more time to ensure I keep on learning and challenging my thinking – ASK WHY. What could be more important than that? I feel inspired.”
“A HUGE thanks. Inspiring and insightful. Looking forward to suggesting and hopefully implementing some of these ideas.”
“Useful to listen and consider – not had a lot of that for a while. Lots of practical suggestions – I am genuinely excited to do more work/research on some of the areas covered . Great to have time to challenge my own thinking and methodology and to learn!”
“Thanks Mary and Lisa, good to have some time to think beyond the operational needs of the moment.”
You also thought having a positive, solutions-focused space would allow you to make a difference back in school:
“Thank you for an informative and above all useful session with practical approaches interwoven throughout.”
“I enjoyed the voicing of all the concerns we are currently experiencing. I feel like there seemed to be solutions and suggestions which are valid and usable.”
“Discussing exactly the issues we are working through at the moment, very helpful input.”
“The whole thing was fantastic. I think the practical things I can now do are big wins.”
“Enjoyed the thinking space to contemplate what we have already in place and the decluttering consideration – we are doing a lot of this now and good to hear another perspective…. Will definitely take this back.”
…and of course, you loved hearing the inspirational Mary Myatt!
